The Hoffman Estates Police Department is a longtime CAC Multidisciplinary Team partner. In December, however, the partnership expanded as their new community Coat Closet provided warm winter coats for several young CAC clients. Staff were able to drop in, pick up the coats and have them ready for the children before they left our office. CAC uses a collaborative, community-based model for forensic interviewing; coordinating resources with our community partners is an added benefit of having those longstanding relationships. We are thankful for the HEPD and the ways we can care for our community together.
The Closet had its grand opening in November and is housed inside the department’s Community Resource Center. Two licensed social workers, Nataly Correa and Alexandra Berkman (pictured above), handle a variety of supportive services related to domestic violence, crisis intervention, senior services and court advocacy. They also provide referrals for shelter, legal aid and substance abuse programs.
The Coat Closet also accepts donations of high need items including:
· New or gently used coats, winter hats and gloves
· Personal hygiene products
· Diapers
· Gifts cards
"Everything is donation-based," Correa explained. "People have been really generous and gracious in getting this up and running."
